I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your help on behalf of my coworker and friend, Zenaida, and her family. Zenaida’s son, Leo, was born with Down syndrome and is nonverbal autistic. He faced serious health challenges early in life, and although he had been doing well for a few years, he has recently begun experiencing severe health issues again.

Just a short time ago, Leo underwent major surgery and was hospitalized for a week during recovery. Yesterday morning, he developed a very high fever and was rushed to All Children’s Hospital. Tragically, he went into septic shock last night and remains in critical condition.

Zenaida has used all of her paid time off (PTO) caring for Leo during his many medical appointments and now has no remaining leave. Unfortunately, she does not qualify for short-term disability because it does not cover time off needed to care for a child. Her husband stays home full-time to care for their children, including Leo, which makes Zenaida’s income essential to keeping the family afloat.

Right now, they are facing serious financial strain on top of the emotional toll of Leo’s condition. We are asking for donations to help cover their monthly bills so Zenaida can focus on what matters most—being there for her son.
