Support Zeb's Road to Recovery

On March 31st, Easter Sunday, my brother Zeb was in a serious, freak bicycle accident on the Avenue of the Republic, in West Philadelphia. A kind bystander found him and called 911, and he was taken to Penn Presbyterian trauma center. The bones in his mid-face were shattered and he fractured two vertebrae. We are fairly certain that his cycling glasses saved his eyesight from more devastating damage than he obtained, and we heard more than once from his medical team that his helmet saved his brain, and quite possibly his life.

Surgeons first performed surgery to fuse the vertebra in his neck. A few days later, a team of maxillofacial surgeons reconstructed his face in a ten-hour surgery. It was a scary, tense, painful ordeal. His medical team has been incredible, and he has the best possible care, but being in that sort of pain and in the hospital for so long is its own kind of misery. It takes a toll.

I am, however, happy to report he is now home and recovering. He's got a long road to recovery ahead. Unable to eat for two weeks, he lost a great deal of weight and accompanying strength. Just a few weeks before the accident, he'd started a landscaping job for a small, specialized company that he loves; the owner has been incredibly kind, supportive and understanding, and he will be welcomed back when he's ready-- but it will take some time.

We're reaching out to his supporters and close friends and family to donate what they can to help him have a few months worry-free that he can devote to getting well. Those of you that know Zeb know how stubbornly independent he is, so it's been hard for him to accept that he needs to give himself time, and we are very worried that he will push himself in unsafe ways.
