Our hearts are heavy as we share the story of Zariyat (Zari) , a bright, compassionate, and determined young woman whose life was forever changed by a random and senseless act of violence. During Howard University’s Homecoming weekend on Friday, October 24, 2025, Zari was tragically caught in a shooting. Though she miraculously survived, she sustained serious injuries to her spine and ribs that will require extensive recovery and rehabilitation.
Zari is known for her warmth, generosity, and commitment to helping others. A senior at Morgan State University, she is pursuing a degree in Biology with dreams of becoming a Physician Assistant. She currently serves as Miss Black and Miss Congeniality of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha for the 2025–2026 academic year. Always active in her community, Zari dedicates her time to mentoring, volunteering, and uplifting everyone around her. Now, it’s our turn to show up for her.
Following the incident, Zari underwent a 12-hour emergency surgery, which thankfully was successful. Her journey to full recovery is still ongoing, and the road ahead will require time, care, and continued support. The goal is to transfer her to Mayo Clinic for advanced treatment and support.
While her spirit remains strong, the emotional and financial toll on her and her family is immense.
The funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward:
• Ongoing medical care and rehabilitation
• Home healthcare, medications, and adaptive equipment
• Medical transport from Maryland to Minnesota
• Physical and occupational therapy
• Home modifications to meet accessibility needs
• Living expenses for Zari and her family during her recovery
Despite the challenges ahead, Zari continues to face each day with grace, faith, and resilience holding tightly to the promise of Romans 8:28:
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.”
Your support through donations, prayers, or simply sharing her story will make a real difference in helping Zari heal and rebuild her life. Every contribution, big or small, brings her one step closer to recovery and independence.
Thank you for standing with Zari and her family during this unimaginable time. Your love and generosity mean more than words can express.
