On the morning of February 20, 2022 Zarif along with his uncles Asif and Sabbir were visiting Bangladesh for a family vacation when they became victims of a gas leak explosion in their residence.
Asif and Sabbir were brothers and best friends. Zarif considered both his uncles to be fatherly figures in his life. Upon the explosion, Sabbir managed to escape, pulling his brother and Zarif from the fire and drove them to a hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Asif was severely burned in the explosion. He fought until the very end. Unfortunately, Asif suffered 90% burns to his body, succumbed to his injuries, and passed away on February 20, 2022. May he rest in peace.
Zarif is currently in the ICU Burn Unit at a hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and has undergone surgery for his injuries. He has suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to both of his legs, making him immobile. Furthermore, his left hand, lower back and his face have also suffered severe burns from the explosion. The burns have resulted in skin disfigurations across his body and he will require skin grafting. His treatment will take months, if not years. He is in constant excruciating pain but fighting through his recovery. Due to the injuries, he is currently unable to perform normal day to day activities on his own.
Zarif is an aircraft mechanic and worked for Helijet during the COVID-19 pandemic as a maintenance engineer, servicing the BC Ambulance helicopters. He grew up in Oulu, Finland before moving to Montreal at a young age, and is fluent in 4 different languages. He loves spending time with his family and friends, cooking, and exploring the outdoors.
Zarif will be unable to work for a long period of time following this tragic accident and currently does not have extended health benefits. The financial impact will be significant. All funds raised will contribute towards his flight back home to Canada with assistance, his medical bills, his continued rehabilitation, trauma counselling, and expenses during his period of unemployment.
Please keep Zarif and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.
We thank you kindly for any support you are able to provide during this time.
