Hello! I’m Darrah Day and I am raising money for my mother, Zana Haworth, to rebuild her life after a fire destroyed her home. All funds will be transferred directly to Zana.
On April 12, 2024, the Village of Brookside unexpectedly caught fire. The fire damaged 33 apartment units, and absolutely destroyed my mom, Zana Haworth's, apartment building. In one night, my mom, and so many others, lost everything.
About Zana Haworth:
My mom is 63 years old. She raised my sister and I, by herself, from the ages of 4 and 2, after our father was killed in an airplane crash. She threw her entire life into raising us. When we were grown, my mom found herself wondering, like many parents, where the time went. She also found herself without a job, an education, or a partner.
At 56, she went back to school and received her medical assistant's certification. I will never forget that she didn't have a car, so she would stand in the cold at 5 am to catch the bus so she could get to class. She never gave up.
She also continued to support me emotionally while I went to law school. She watched my son when I had to work at night waiting tables. She cooked for me throughout my semester exams and the bar exam. She was my cheerleader every step of the way. All the while she pursued her nursing degree at TCC.
During her schooling, she spent her time volunteering and eventually working at a hospice, being a rock for people leaving this life, and/or saying goodbye to loved ones.
She became an LPN in 2019, 8 years after her journey began. She spent the first part of her career working at a facility for adults with developmental disabilities. In 2020, she moved into the Village at Brookside. When she first moved in, she only had her bed, a table we have had since 2002, and a folding chair.
Over the next four years she turned that apartment into a home. She formed friendships with her neighbors and built a community for herself. She also got a new job, at Montereau, caring for the elderly.
She was working the night the fire broke out. And just like that.....everything was gone. Everything she had worked so hard to build. I'll never forget her saying that she is so tired of starting over again.
If you've read this far, then you can probably tell that my mother is the type of person who will drop anything to help you. When we were little she spent her free time volunteering for Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross, and the United Way. In 2005, when Katrina hit, she spent three months driving back and forth between Tulsa and Camp Gruber, helping people misplaced by the storm. If anyone deserves support from her community during this time, it is her.
I ask you to help her rebuild her life. Even if you can only give a little bit, even if it is five dollars, it will help her so much.
Thank you so much for reading, and for your generosity!
