My oldest son, Zach, is a devoted father to his 7-year-old daughter, Whitley. Their bond is incredibly strong, and they love spending time together outdoors—fishing, going for walks, and making memories. But this fall, everything changed for them. Zach, who is diabetic, developed a serious infection in his right foot in early November. The infection progressed quickly, and he had to undergo a below-knee amputation. He spent a month in the hospital and then in rehabilitation at Jim Thorpe, working hard to adjust to his new reality.

Now, Zach faces daily challenges that most of us take for granted. Walking is just one of many things he can’t do without the help of a walker or wheelchair. He can’t drive, and he relies on family for even the most basic tasks. This has been incredibly hard not just for Zach, but for Whitley as well. Their favorite activities—like fishing and going for walks—are on hold, and their life together looks very different right now. Zach was supposed to start a new job the very week his infection began, so there is no income coming in for rent, groceries, or the many medical expenses that aren’t covered by insurance. He’s waiting to be fitted for a prosthetic leg this spring or summer, depending on how his leg heals.
