Hi everyone!

Happy New Year! My name is Yvette Torres and I am currently attending the University of California, Los Angeles as a second year student majoring in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.

After the completion of my undergraduate degree, I am planning to attend a Physician Assistant school in California. I am aspiring to become a Cardiothoracic Surgeon (CT) Physician Assistant (PA).

I am currently volunteering at both Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on the Oncology unit, and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on the Cardiology Unit. Aside from volunteering at hospitals, I am also a teaching assistant (TA) for my previous AP Biology and STEM teacher at my old high school. I also partake in medical clubs at my school, focusing on bridging the gap between impoverished communities and healthcare access.

Through this GoFundMe I am raising money for a trip to attend Italy through the program Atlantis in the summer of 2026. Atlantis is a program that gives students the opportunity to shadow physicians abroad in niche specialties of the students' interest. For me, this would mean shadowing surgeons inside of an operating room while they perform various procedures. This type of shadowing is very rare to be able to do in the United States, which is why this program is such a great way to get first-hand experience into the career I am working towards.

I do not want money to be the factor that prevents me from going on this trip that will undoubtedly open a vast amount of doors in my career. This is where you are able to help me reach my goals!

The cost of this trip through the program is $8,000. I am asking to share this GoFundMe with anyone you know in order to help me raise money for this trip. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Me llamo Yvette Torres y actualmente estudio en la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles (UCLA), donde estoy en mi segundo año de la carrera de Biología Molecular, Celular y del Desarrollo (Biología MCyD).

Después de terminar mi licenciatura, planeo estudiar para ser asistente médico en California. Mi objetivo es convertirme en asistente médico especializada en cirugía cardiotorácica.

Actualmente soy voluntaria en el Centro Médico Cedars-Sinai, en la unidad de Oncología, y en el Centro Médico Ronald Reagan UCLA, en la unidad de Cardiología. Además de mi voluntariado en hospitales, también soy ayudante de Biología Avanzada y de ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (CTIM) en mi antigua escuela secundaria. También participó en clubes de medicina en mi escuela, con el objetivo de reducir la brecha entre las comunidades desfavorecidas y el acceso a la atención médica.

A través de esta campaña de GoFundMe, estoy recaudando fondos para un viaje a Italia en el verano de 2026, a través del programa Atlantis. Atlantis es un programa que brinda a los estudiantes la oportunidad de observar a médicos en el extranjero, en especialidades específicas de su interés. En mi caso, esto significaría observar a cirujanos dentro de un quirófano mientras realizan diversos procedimientos. Este tipo de experiencia es muy difícil de conseguir en Estados Unidos, por lo que este programa es una excelente oportunidad para obtener experiencia práctica en la profesión a la que aspiro.
