Three years ago, my wife Yohana was diagnosed with an extremely rare blood disorder called aHUS, which affects only about 17 adults worldwide each year. This silent disease causes her immune system to attack her own blood vessels, leading to micro thrombosis and permanent damage in multiple organs. Just a month after her diagnosis, we learned that her kidneys had become necrotic, and she was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease. Since then, Yohana’s journey has been filled with challenges. Two years ago, she spent three months in the Emory ICU due to bleeding ulcers caused by aHUS. She has also developed IIH (Idiopathic Inter-cranial Hypertension) and heart failure. Most recently, she was admitted to the ICU again for volume overload and ascites, which led to an emergency open-heart surgery. She is currently still in the ICU, on a ventilator and now a tracheotomy to support her breathing. I have been by her side full-time, and we are working to get her listed for a kidney transplant at the Miami Transplant Institute. This process requires us to save a significant amount to cover post-surgery expenses, as we may need to stay in Miami for up to three months for daily and weekly labs and check-ups. The funds raised here will help us cover travel expenses, ongoing medical bills, and living expenses while I am away from work. With two kids at home, your support will also help us with groceries and daily needs during this challenging time. To all our supporters, know that the mountain has been steep and it still looks like it, but know that we are overcoming and we will. All your support doesn’t go unnoticed—we appreciate even the words of encouragement, as they make a huge impact for us. Your kindness helps us remain focused, engaged, and positive, even when things look the grimmest. We are eternally grateful for every single person who sends a message or donates. Thank you for all the support, and know that we will pay this forward, as being on this side of the struggle has shown us how much others may be going through as well. Thank you.
