Coronavirus can take away our physical contact but it can't take away our love and humanity. It has been so encouraging to see people supporting each other in times of uncertainty, chaos, and fear. While sheltering in place may simply be an inconvenience to some of us, to others this is hugely devastating both emotionally and financially. I have heard many people asking "What can I do to help others during the Coronavirus pandemic?"
One concrete way to help is to support the restaurant industry. Governor Pritzker has made the thoughtful and necessary decision to mandate all Illinois restaurants and bars to close dine-in service. And with the new shelter-in-place order, this will be extended to at least 4/7. Restaurant industry employees show up for us ALL DAY EVERY DAY, through precarious weather and consecutive late nights, so we can connect and enjoy time with our loved ones. Now is our time to give back. Order take out. Buy a restaurant gift card. Check in on your friends in the industry.
One restaurant in particular I want to highlight is Yeowoosai, a lively Korean restaurant and bar with a vibe that makes everyone feel like family. A staple in the Asian American community, Yeowoosai has been investing in our city and community for years. Since their opening in 1995, they have not closed a single day, being there for us through our trials and celebrations. Hard working and dedicated as ever, they are shifting to take out/delivery service and attempting to keep financially supporting as many employees as possible. Unfortunately, this has been incredibly challenging in these uncertain times, and they have had to make the heartbreaking choice to lay off most of their employees. If you would like an opportunity to bond together, support one another, and give back to an industry that loves us day in and day out, please consider donating to Yeowoosai. All proceeds will go to financially support the employees who are temporarily without work or pay. Our goal is to raise enough money to support rent, healthcare, and living expenses. Anything we raise over $20,000 will go to the restaurant to assist with utilities, rent, and operations. Yeowoosai has been a staple in the Asian American community for 25 years.
