A New Beginning: Escaping the Shadows and Building a Brighter Future with Education
Nick Orth here. My partner Michael DeSalvo and I have been providing hospitality to Yamen at our Catholic Worker House for the last year or so. While we have been able to provide the basics; a safe place to live, food and caring support, we unfortunately cannot afford to provide everything Yamen desperately needs to move forward with his life.
Please donate what you can!
Dear gentle readers and generous people,
My name is Yamen, and I am reaching out sincerely and humbly to ask for your help as I take the most crucial steps toward reclaiming my life and independence.
My story began in 2018 when, believing I had found the love of my life, I left everything behind in Lebanon to start anew with my partner in the United States.
With dreams of building a loving, stable life together, I moved to North Carolina. However, my dream quickly turned into a nightmare. The partner I thought would stand by my side revealed himself to be a controlling, manipulative, and abusive individual. In the confines of this toxic relationship, I found myself isolated - restrained from seeking help, forming friendships, or accessing any form of support.
My spouse manipulated and controlled every aspect of my existence, even withdrawing my petition for legal residency twice, dangling my immigration status precariously to keep me dependent. The emotional and psychological abuse escalated into physical violence, with horrifying episodes where my life was nearly taken from me.
After years of suffering, I made the life-altering decision to flee. I escaped to Syracuse, New York, where I am now determined to build a new life driven by autonomy, education, and healing. My goals are clear:
* Attend school to build a career that can ensure my stability.
* File a self-petition under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to protect my legal status.
* Initiate divorce proceedings to permanently distance myself from the past filled with abuse and pain.
Starting fresh while dealing with the trauma of my past and an uncertain immigration status is overwhelmingly challenging, particularly as I am not currently eligible to work. Here, your help can make an immeasurable difference. I am seeking to raise funds for:
- Tuition and school supplies to pursue education - the cornerstone of my new beginning
- A reliable car for commuting, attending classes, and finding a sense of freedom and independence once more.
Every dollar you contribute propels me one step closer to standing on my own feet. Here's a breakdown of how your generosity will be used:
- Tuition and School Supplies: $9800
- Reliable Transportation: $5000
Your support is not just financial aid; it is a vote of confidence in a future where I can live free from fear and oppression. My goal is to not just survive my past but to thrive and contribute positively to the community that takes me in.
Sharing this campaign or donating whatever you can will be immeasurably appreciated. Your kindness is the foundation upon which I hope to rebuild my life. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for taking the time to read my story and for any support you can provide. Your generosity is a lifeline, showing me that there is still hope and humanity in the world.
Thank you once again for your support. Together, we can turn a tale of despair into one of resilience, revival, and a future redefined by hope and freedom.
With deepest gratitude,
Yamen El Ahmed.
