Help me, Wyatt To, to publish my translated and illustrated book based on a famous Chinese story: The Seven Step Poem.
I am a rising 12th grader in high school and have a deep interest in learning languages. While I can speak both Spanish and Japanese, the language I'm most fluent in is Mandarin, which I've practiced since my childhood. As I am Chinese American, by learning Mandarin I've been able to deepen my connections with my own family and heritage. Because of that, I hold a more special connection to it than other language. I also enjoy drawing in my free time, and like to give my friends and teachers little doodles during holidays.
Last year when I was a sophomore, a counselor suggested that I use my language skills and art skills to illustrate a children's book. Coincidentally I had an upcoming assignment in class to write a cultural story. Wanting to kill two birds with one stone, I researched a poem from China and adopted it into a children's book.
A few months later I went into the publishing process, trying to figure out how one independently publishes a book. However, whilst doing so, I learn that my book might be able to be more than just a homework assignment. Looking around, I saw that most of the children's books that contained both Mandarin and English were either translated English tales or AP textbooks. Friends and parents also expressed their frustrations in trying to find cultural kid's books to connect to their children with, and I realized that I could help alleviate this issue by publishing this book, and donating copies.
As such, if you are any bit interested in helping me with my goal of donating my book to schools and institutions, please help me raise funds for my GoFundMe.
The plan is that for every book purchased, one book will be donated to a school. Any additional proceeds will be rolled over to purchase additional books for schools. If you also just want to donate books let us know. The hope is that the book may foster another kid's connection to either a language, a culture, or maybe even their parents.
The cost is $14 for a copy of the book, but we kindly ask you to donate $28 so that we may donate a copy to a school. If you want to donate and would like a copy sent to you please leave your address in the GoFundMe notes at the bottom of this page.
Yes you can order multiple copies!
