My heart goes out to anyone around the world affected by a natural disaster.

It’s hard to comprehend the toll that a catastrophic hurricane, flood, wildfire or earthquake takes on a community, unless you’re in the midst of it.

As you may know, my homeland of Jamaica was struck by Hurricane Melissa, which was the most powerful hurricane in the history of the island.

My name is Winsome and I’m creating this fundraiser for my family and community back home in Mandeville, Jamaica where I was born and raised.

The storm damaged homes, land, and cut off essential things like electricity and running water, making everyday life incredibly difficult. Thousands have been displaced.

As Jamaicans, we’re known for being strong, resilient, prideful, loving, and caring. We look out for each other — it’s who we are.

I lived through Hurricane Gilbert in the 1980s, and I remember how frightening it was, how long the recovery took, and how our community had to rebuild piece by piece.

Right now my loved ones are facing that same uphill battle.

The stress of losing basic necessities, worrying about the safety of loved ones, and trying to figure out how to start over is overwhelming.

Any support — whether financial or through donating clothes, food or other essentials — would help lift some of that emotional and mental burden while giving them the resources they need to rebuild.

The funds raised will go directly toward:

• Restoring electricity and running water

• Rebuilding damaged homes (roofs, windows, and structural repairs)

• Providing food, clean water, clothing, and essential supplies.
