Winnie Nansumba is a 27-year old young Ugandan Woman born and living with HIV. She is passionate about becoming a change agent in her community to reduce HIV stigma and discrimination, hold HIV awareness campaigns and imparting different life copying skills in young people. Winnie gained a Bachelors’ degree in Guidance and Counseling from Ndejje University and is now a peer educator, Professional Counselor and HIV activist. Her passion to work with young people inspired her to volunteer with different organizations working with reproductive health, HIV and peer education. Currently Winnie is working with Mildmay Uganda where she is the project assistant under the DREAMS project which aims to reduce the incidence of new HIV infection in adolescent girls and young women. In 2014, Winnie co-founded an organization, the Innocent League (www.innocentleague.com), whose mission is to promote human respect, understanding and tolerance among young people. Winnie has been recognized for her leadership efforts. In 2015 she was identified by the Moremi Initiative as one of the emerging young African women leaders. In 2017, She was awarded the distinction of being a Mandela Washington Fellow through the US State Department's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), She also represented Ugandan youth where she read a statement to Pope Francis during his visit to Uganda in 2015
Winnie has been conditionally accepted to attend the Coady International Institute at St. Francis Xavier University in Canada as part of their Women’s Leadership in Community Development Program. This program creates space for women leaders to build their leadership skills and learn to better position themselves and their work to create greater social change. Winnie has received a partial scholarship to attend the program and is seeking support of $3500 USD to support her to reach the full tuition amount and cover transport costs. This program promises to provide Winnie with even more knowledge and skills to accomplish her mission to inspire the current and future generations in Uganda to have the hope and confidence to realize their full potential.
