Our dog Willow, an 8-year-old mini Australian Shepherd, has always been healthy and full of energy. She’s been my travel companion who goes everywhere with me since she was just 3 months old. But on November 16th, everything suddenly changed.

On November 14th, we noticed Willow having a hard time jumping up and down from furniture and favoring her front paw at times. By November 16th, she started to become unsteady on her feet and have brief episodes of mental unawareness.

We rushed her to the Minnesota Emergency Clinic, where she received bloodwork, a urinalysis, organ checks, and a neurological exam. The ER visit was $988, which family helped us cover so she could be seen right away.

The ER team suspected a neurological issue and referred us to a specialist. Luckily, Minnesota Veterinary Neurology had a last-minute opening the next day. Willow received an MRI and spinal tap, which cost $4,175—a loan generously provided by family.

Her MRI results came back normal, but a spinal tap showed inflammation in her cerebrospinal fluid, indicating a neurological issue. This week, Willow began treatment with antibiotics and steroids. We are taking everything one day at a time and remain hopeful for her future.

This all came just over a week after my partner unexpectedly lost his mother and we were involved in a car accident during travel to see family. Emotionally and financially, the timing has been incredibly difficult, but we are doing everything we can to care for Willow.

These unexpected medical expenses have been overwhelming, and any help toward Willow’s care would mean the world to us. Even sharing her story can help us—or someone else—who is facing unexpected health concerns with their pet. Willow means so much to us, she is my best friend and an irreplaceable part of our lives.
