Support Willie Windus Following His Traumatic Car Accident.

For those friends and extended family who may not know, on Monday, September 23rd at around 2:30pm my dad, Willie Windus, was involved in a horrific car accident. He spent 6 days in critical condition, under medical sedation and intubated in the ICU at UNC Surgical Hospital. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, fractures to his face, collarbone and 15 ribs. He bruised and punctured his lungs. Tore his Anterior Longitudinal Ligament between T4 and T7 along his spine and suffered internal bleeding and lots of bruising. After 20 sleepless nights, and some very difficult, emotionally draining days - between having his breathing tube removed and almost put back in, spinal surgery and all of the highs and lows that come with such a serious accident he has finally been stepped down from the ICU to a regular room!

With all of that said, he is still in the hospital and dealing with severe pain from the intense trauma of the accident. While we may be out of the woods in terms of the critical nature of his injuries, we obviously have a long road in front of us. Looking to the future, he will need a lot of rehab that will most likely include inpatient and outpatient treatment. Due to the nature of his accident and injuries, coupled with the layout and location of their current home, our parents will be forced to move. He will need transportation to his appointments after his discharge and there is a very real probability he may never be able to work again. The reality of the daunting financial impacts to our family are just beginning to set in.

If you know our family, you know how much my dad means to me and my brother. He is everything I want my sons to aspire to be. Kind, funny, a man who steps up even when it’s not his responsibility to do so. But if you know my dad, you also know he is a TOUGH S.O.B.! He is fighting with all he has and I have high hopes he will come out on the other side of this and be with his grandsons, and the rest of his family who love him so much, again.

Our family is so thankful for those that have reached out with their concerns; offering thoughts and prayers after hearing of this horrific incident.
