On Monday, January 26, Wayne was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident. He is currently being treated at Yale New Haven Hospital in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Wayne sustained severe head trauma, a left carotid artery injury, and subsequent small strokes, vision-threatening damage to his left eye, multiple skull fractures, a fractured C6 vertebra, several facial fractures, and a shattered pelvis. He is currently intubated, sedated, on pain medication, and has not regained consciousness. When the medical team has lightened his sedation to test his neurological responses, he is starting to respond to commands. His care team is excellent, and his pain and injuries are being well-managed.
It will take time to know the extent of his brain injury and what this will mean moving forward, but his team is working hard to optimize his neurological function, preserve his vision, and address his orthopedic injuries. He will need multiple surgeries to stabilize his pelvis and reconstruct his facial bones.
We are asking for support paying for medical expenses, home modifications, and ongoing care needs moving forward. We do not know how long he will need to be in the hospital or what his rehabilitation will look like. We do know that it will be a long and difficult road, and we greatly appreciate any support that can be given. Your kindness and generosity will help us focus on Wayne's recovery and give us hope during this incredibly challenging time.
