We’re Patrice Bell & Olivia Ragan, two Brooklyn-Based Theatre Artists & we’re making a play! Two years ago, we felt frustrated with how gatekept and profit-driven the Theater Industry has become, and we wanted to do something about it. So we’re producing an entirely new work with our own resources (and yours).
"The One With Violets In Her Lap" is a full-length play with music based on the fragmented poetry of Sappho, the prolific Greek poet whom Plato referred to as The Tenth Muse. It is a fantastical and fictional account of a brief time in Sappho’s life, one we know so little about. This play will take you on a journey to Ancient Greece, where you’ll get to see Sappho fall in love, experience great loss, and maybe even encounter a Goddess or two. “The One With Violets In Her Lap” is a play about women, specifically women who love women, and finding our place in a world meant for neither.
Here’s where you come in. To make this dream a reality, we need your support. Because nothing happens without community. We often encourage each other’s dreams and build each other up, but now is the time to put your money where your mouth is. Any amount you’re able to contribute makes a huge difference, and goes toward paying a working artist for their time. We can’t do this without you. Thank you so much for your contribution. We look forward to seeing you at The Flea in May!
