Viola is a Neuro ICU nurse at UAB Hospital. She had been suffering with back pain since January of this year, but as a young, healthy and active twenty-eight-year-old she assumed it was just a pulled muscle. After months of no relief, she went to see one of the Neuro-Spine surgeons at UAB that we work with. He ordered some imaging to be done and saw a tumor on her lower spine. Once he saw that he ordered more imaging to be done on the rest of her spine, where he then saw three more tumors on her upper spine. The mass on her lower spine was compressing her spinal cord and had caused a fracture to one of her vertebrae which was causing tremendous pain to her legs and some nerve pain. He ordered a CT of her chest and abdomen which resulted showing some nodules on her lungs and a mass on her kidneys. She went to have a biopsy done from the mass in her lower back, then she went to the OR to have the tumor debulked and a fixation and fusion to fix the fracture the tumor caused. She was supposed to have surgery on her upper back as well, but the pathology on the biopsy came back as a very advanced Stage 4 Neuroendocrine Carcinoma that is fast growing and very aggressive. After this diagnosis the radiation oncologist said he thinks it can be treated with radiation and the hematology oncologist wants to start chemotherapy this week.
There are a lot of moving parts to the care she is getting, and things are changing daily. She needs thoughts and prayers the most., but with this diagnosis she is not able to work so she also needs some financial support. Anything would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
