Vinny was Native American and Mexican, a lover of jazz music and spicy food, and as a child, he dreamed of becoming an astronomer and archaeologist. He grew up with his tribal community in the midwest but faced severe mental health challenges after moving to California. Vinny never received mental health treatment, despite a severe diagnosed mental illness and his multiple attempts to access help.
On November 18, he sought inpatient care at John George Psychiatric Hospital, but was turned away by a doctor who claimed his condition wasn't severe enough, despite his diagnosed mental illness and his recent hospitalization at that very facility. On November 24, Vinny was found dead after his suicide.
Vinny is survived by his father and brother, who are devastated by this sudden loss and are unprepared for the funeral costs. We humbly ask our communities to contribute towards the costs of a basic cremation and viewing. Any amount helps, but if you are unable to donate, you can also help by sharing the fundraiser or taking a moment of silence or prayer for Vinny and his family.
Vinny's greatest wish was to feel cared for by people. While we are heartbroken that he died alone, we believe he would be grateful and touched to know that people are coming together to support him and his family. Thank you for your care and solidarity.
