Support Vinnie Pedruco
On the 27th of September Vinnie and some mates had gone out after a long day of work in Zambia. On their way back to camp, the ute Vinnie was a passenger in crashed into a concrete barrier, causing it to roll and flip onto its roof. Thankfully the driver was pulled out relatively quickly, but Vinnie was trapped. Eventually another work mate came along and managed to cut Vinnie free, saving his life.
He was taken to hospital in Zambia in critical condition. Once stabilised he was medivaced to South Africa.
The prognosis was not good - Vinnie had a snapped arm, broken shoulder, 5 broken ribs, a collapsed lung and, most concerning, a spinal fracture from C2-C5.
After life saving surgery lasting 7 hours Vinnie was placed into an induced coma to help his body heal. Surgeons put a metal rod in his back to stabilise his spine, pinned in his badly broken arm and re-inflated his collapsed lung (which collapsed again several days after surgery).
After 4 days in an induced coma Vinnie woke up, wanting a cigarette in typical Vinnie fashion.
He has been given a 10% chance of walking again and is currently paralysed from the chest down.
While we are extremely lucky and grateful to have Vinnie alive today he has a huge and difficuly journey ahead of him, and the bills are quickly mounting up.
He has a partner and 2 small children in Thailand, who he hasn't been able to see yet as his youngest has severe medical conditions of his own which require regular hospital visits. They have a mortage, medical and school bills to be paid, and now there is no money coming in.
To ensure he is receiving the best possible medical care Vinnie will be returning to Australia for rehabilitation. Just having him home is going to be a huge task, but the emotional and finincial hurdles to come will be monumental.
While its not in Vinnie's nature to ask for handouts, as his family we know he needs all the help he can get in order to support him and his family now and into the future.
Any support, large or small will be a huge help.
