For the past 16 years, my husband Vincent has been quietly battling severe diverticulitis. Many close friends and family know about his ongoing health struggles, but he’s always tried to push through and keep moving forward for our family. Recently, his condition took a turn for the worse. After a severe flare-up, Vincent was hospitalized and has now spent several days in the hospital, unable to eat while doctors prepared him for emergency exploratory surgery. He will be undergoing open surgery, and his recovery will include living with a colostomy bag for at least three months—possibly up to nine months depending on how his body heals.
