On November 18, 1891, Trinity Episcopal Church in Vincentown, New Jersey, was the setting for a notable wedding between Mary Stretch Irick and George W. Childs Drexel. Mary, born in 1868 in Vincentown, was the daughter of General William Hudson Irick and Sally Stretch. She grew up on the 240-acre estate "Locust Grove" just outside the town. Mary was well-known for her equestrian skills and attended Miss Fannie Morrow’s private school in Beverly, New Jersey, before completing her education at the Patapsco Institute in Ellicott Mills, Maryland.
George W. Childs Drexel was the youngest son of financier Anthony J. Drexel, founder of Drexel University. The couple's wedding was officiated by the Right Reverend Bishop Scarborough of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey. Mary wore a double star of diamonds, a gift from her mother-in-law, Mrs. Anthony Drexel. Guests traveled by train from Philadelphia to attend the ceremony. In preparation for the event, the church underwent certain permanent alterations, including an extension to the sanctuary, to accommodate the guests.
Following their marriage, the Drexels became prominent philanthropists and patrons of the arts. They were notable patrons of the Metropolitan Opera Company and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Mary was also recognized for her contributions during World War I and her work as Director of the Philadelphia Red Cross. In 1923, she endowed a library in her hometown, named the Sally Stretch Keen Memorial Library, in honor of her mother.
Trinity Episcopal Church, built in 1871, continues to serve the Vincentown community, reflecting the rich history of the area and the enduring legacy of the Drexel family.
Donations are very much appreciated and none too small. All contributions will go to our building fund towards the cost of this project.
With sincere thankfulness- the Vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church.
