This GoFundMe is in support of my friend Vicky and her family as they start a hopeful chapter of their lives treating her son Sebastian’s cystic fibrosis.

Vicky and her husband, Richard, have always dreamed of having children. After experiencing a devastating stillbirth, their happy, healthy family seemed complete as they welcomed three beautiful kids under the age of three—Elijah, and their twin boys Sebastian, and Xavier. But, their journey took a nightmarish turn when they learned that their son, Sebastian, had cystic fibrosis (CF), a rare and fatal genetic disease.

Despite doctors’ initial dismissals, Vicky’s persistence led to a diagnosis on November 9, 2018, the same date Vicky and Richard lost their first son. Sebastian’s two CF variants, both rare in Canada, made him part of a special group of “Raries” a cohort that faces challenging, unique barriers to accessing medicines and treatments. With no cure in sight, Vicky and Richard fought tirelessly for access to life-saving therapies, including the groundbreaking drug Trikafta, which dramatically improves the lives of CF patients.

In late 2024, after a six-year battle with red tape and countless setbacks, their family got the best Christmas present ever – Sebastian was approved for Trikafta. But celebrations over this miraculous milestone were short-lived when the family realized the drug wasn’t fully covered. They would need to pay a hefty yearly deductible to access the medication for Sebastian’s new treatment while keeping up with other medical supplies. With three kids, a mortgage, everyday expenses, and other out-of-pocket medical costs, they are already stretched thin. They can’t shoulder this burden.

They are proud, generous people who would never dream of asking for help – this is why I’ve set up the GoFundMe on their behalf. I’m asking for your support to help cover the cost of Sebastian’s medication, treatment, and essential medical supplies. Their family has spent years advocating for CF and rare disease awareness—now it’s time for us to give back.
