As many of you know, our dear friend, Vickie Cass, was diagnosed with Stage IIIB lung cancer (possibly stage IV – depending on pending tests). Vickie is one of the most fit people around and this came completely out of left field, shocking everyone. What has also come as a shock is the cost for treatment. Vickie and her family have to pay $20,000 out of pocket immediately for their deductible. She is slated for her first treatment in July which consists of a month and a half of intensive chemo several times per week, followed by radiation. She will most likely need further chemo treatments and other costly drugs for the next 1-5 years. The doctors also discussed extensive physical therapy after her treatments . There will be other costs – gas and parking for treatments and follow-ups, cooling headwraps and homeopathic remedies to counteract chemo’s effects, and other unseen financial burdens. No family should struggle covering the cost of life saving treatment. No family should go into debt to take care of their loved one. The Cass’s insurance will cover 80% of the costs, yet, according to the Clinical Journal of Oncology, the median cost of lung cancer treatment is $238,200 per year.

Vickie has an energy that is unmatched. She lights up a room, makes us laugh until we cry, turns every ordinary event into a party, and makes us feel brave with her authenticity and fearlessness. She holds close to her heart every kindergartener she has taught and every animal she has rescued, and she is a Mama Bear not only in her love for her family and friends, but in her unwavering loyalty.

I have no doubt anyone who knows Vickie has been the recipient of her generosity, kindness, wit, infectious sense of humor and compassion. Now, I am asking that we give that back, banding together and supporting our beloved friend during this time.
