Our dear friend Vic Vela was recently diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. He is at peace with the diagnosis, but the memory issues and other related symptoms he’s been experiencing the last few years will progress. Here’s something he wrote recently:
I know this is a lot for you to take in. It certainly was for me, which is why I haven’t been able to talk about it until now. I know what lies ahead: I may be facing some dark days in the near future. I know that. Pretty soon, I won’t remember much of what has happened in my life—which is why I need you to remember things for me. Remember that time we laughed over brunch; the time we screamed with joy over a Broncos or Nuggets win; the time we sang along to “Scarlet Begonias” together at a Dead show; the time I said something that made you laugh out loud; the time I said something that made you cry.
Hold on to our shared memories for me, as I’m unable to do the same.
Vic is going to continue pushing ahead with the Back from Broken podcast and will release some excellent interviews again soon. Heck, he’s already survived addiction, overdoses, diabetes, and an HIV diagnosis. He’s a deeply resilient guy.
However, he might not ever work in a traditional job again and would benefit from the financial support of friends, listeners, and admirers.
If you’ve ever felt the positive touch of Vic in your life, please consider donating. The contributions will go a long way toward ensuring Vic can continue to live a meaningful life, even as he deals with this extremely challenging disease.
Please keep Vic in your prayers and well wishes. He deserves it.
