Support Vet for Australian Bushfire Relief
My name is Ashley Palkowetz (DVM), and I am a recent graduate and licensed veterinarian working in the United States. Like many outside of Australia, I've been watching the news and media displaying the devastating destruction the brush fires have caused Australia, it's people, and wildlife. (Monitoring anesthesia on a flamingo with chronic pododermatitis).
Recently I've been given an opportunity to do more than just watch from afar. I've been invited to join a small group of pre-veterinary students and fellow veterinarians of my undergraduate college, Delaware Valley University, to lend our skills and knowledge to help aid Australia's wildlife.(Bottle feeding newborn Amur Tiger Cubs at Philadelphia Zoo).
We will be leaving June, 2020 and staying for 16 days to help ease pressure and aid the local vets, as well as teach future veterinarians about the importance of conservation and rehabilitation. However, this mission is volunteer, and the cost of flight, board, food, transportation and tuition is beyond my scope. The total for traveling to Australia for the aid is $5100, with broken down numbers below.:
Cost: $5100
Airfare: $1200
Program Fees (Lodging, Food, Transport, etc): $3350
Tuition: $550
With help from my family I've saved a down payment of $1000 now. Airfare is due May 8th ($1200), the remaining is due April 15th, 2020.(Routine dental cleaning of Timber Wolf, Wildlife Prairie Park, IL).
About myself: I am a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine 2018 and have focused my studies and volunteer work in wildlife and veterinary medicine. I have worked with a menagerie of animals, and have experience at the Philadelphia Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, Popcorn Park Zoo and others. (Routine general checkup of critically endangered Mhorrs Gazelle, Philadelphia Zoo).
I want to thank you for reading, and please know all donations will be going directly to this mission. Any extra funds will be donated to (Emergency Fund for Wildlife) to support wildlife aftercare and funds.(Assistant in surgery for Asiatic Black Bear, Ben for SCC at Philadelphia Zoo).
For any reason, if I am unable to go to this mission, I will donate all proceeds to the same charity (WIRES-Emergency Fund for Wildlife).
