As many of you know, Veronica has been battling chronic recurrent refractory pericarditis for the last 12 years. She has endured countless treatments, hoping to avoid the most extreme option—open-heart surgery. However, after years of persistent flares and unsuccessful treatments, we traveled back to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in December to meet with her specialist team and surgeon.

After much prayer, careful thought, and guidance from her medical team, Veronica has made the incredibly difficult decision to undergo open-heart surgery to remove the pericardial sac—a step that was first discussed over a decade ago when this painful journey began. At that time, Thiago was just a year old, and Veronica wanted to exhaust every possible treatment before taking on this high-risk surgery.

Over the past few months, we have gradually shared more about Veronica’s journey and have been deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support. Many of you have reached out, offering meals, childcare, and asking how you can assist us financially. Accepting the need for this fundraiser has been a difficult step, but we also recognize the incredible kindness of our community and your desire to stand beside us during this time.

With grateful hearts, we are reaching out for support. We don’t yet know the full extent of the financial burden, but any contribution will make a meaningful difference. All funds raised will go toward medical expenses, travel, and lodging as we navigate this challenging road ahead.

Veronica faces a long road to recovery. Many patients undergoing this surgery are unable to work for six months or more. We remain hopeful that her strength and resilience—beyond this illness—will aid in her healing.

UPDATE: 3/25/25

Veronica successfully underwent her open heart surgery (Pericardectomy) yesterday, March 24th, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. We arrived last Wednesday evening for pre-op appointments to ensure everything was in place and ready for the surgery. Veronica spent just under 24 hours in the cardiac ICU and was moved to the step-down unit today(3/25/25). She is recovering well, and if all goes as planned, she is expected to be discharged this Saturday. Between her discharge and the day we fly back to Oregon on April 8th, Veronica will have several follow-up appointments.
