Support Varun’s Journey to the 2026 World Chess Championship

At just seven years and two months old, our son Varun Karthik Turaga has already achieved something extraordinary. He is currently ranked number two in the United States for his age group in chess. From June to July 2026, he has the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete at the Under-8 World Chess Championship, representing the United States on the global stage. This is more than just a tournament; it is the culmination of years of dedication, countless hours of practice, and a dream that inspires not only him but also other young players who see what is possible through hard work and passion.

Varun first picked up a chess piece at age three and won his first tournament that same year. By age five, he had already won his first rated tournament, and it quickly became clear that he had a special gift. Since then, he has participated in around 50 tournaments and is a two-time California State Champion. What started as a fun game has evolved into a passion that has taken him across the United States, from California to Maryland to Florida and beyond. In all of these competitions, he has consistently performed well against the best players in his age category.

Beyond the trophies and rankings, chess has imparted discipline, patience, and creativity—qualities that are evident in every aspect of his life.

Competing at the World Championships is an incredible honor, but it also comes with considerable expenses. We estimate the total cost to be $28,000, which will cover international travel to Europe for Varun and a parent, accommodations during the two-week tournament, intensive coaching and training support leading up to the event, along with tournament entry fees, and related costs. To date, we have already invested around $21,000 in Varun’s chess journey, covering intensive training and travel to nearly 50 out-of-city tournaments. His aspiration is to strive to become the youngest grandmaster in the world, a goal that necessitates the utmost preparation over the next four to four-and-a-half years.

The estimated $28,000 in upcoming expenses includes:
⦁ $10,000 - Travel and lodging for Varun and a parent for 14 days in Europe
⦁ $9,000 - Out-of-state tournaments prior to the World Championship (at least six)
⦁ $6,000 - Intensive coaching
⦁ $3,000 - In-state tournaments (approximately 30)

This journey extends beyond a single child's ambition. It represents the possibilities that emerge when talent, commitment, and community backing unite. By supporting Varun's participation in the World Championships, you are not only aiding his development but also motivating other young players to have confidence in themselves. Every donation, regardless of size, brings us one step closer to turning this dream into a reality. If you're unable to contribute, please consider spreading the word about this campaign to friends, family, and your community. Your encouragement and support are invaluable to a seven-year-old chasing a big dream.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in Varun. With your help, he will not only compete at the World Championships but also carry with him the encouragement of everyone who made it possible.
