Hello, my name is Vanessa. I’m 24 years old and recently graduated with an associate degree in film production. Ever since I picked up a camera, I’ve dreamed of working on a film set.

Less than a year after graduating, I discovered a large mass in my foot. After a series of scans and tests, I was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma — a rare and aggressive form of cancer that typically occurs in the abdomen. It affects only about 1 in 100,000 people in the U.S. each year.

Because the tumor in my foot is so extensive, the only way to preserve my quality of life is to undergo a below-the-knee amputation. After surgery, I’ll need a prosthetic leg not only to walk again, but also to return to the physically demanding work I love behind the camera.

This has been a life-changing and overwhelming experience, but I’m determined to move forward with strength and hope.
