My name is Jenny, and I am the mother of 3 adult girls. I found out about 6 months ago that I have congestive heart failure. I had to quit where I’ve worked the last 33 years, due to the added stress to my heart, with my high energy, non-stop job. While being out of work every parents worst nightmare happens.
On January 29, 2026, at 9:22 am, my youngest daughter, Vanessa, who’s 26, was struck by a van going between 40-45 mph on N. Expressway while she was crossing the road on foot. Upon impact, she was thrown 134 ft before hitting the ground. The first officer on the scene from Griffin PD, checked on her, then did CPR until the paramedics arrived. She had to be intubated on the scene and life-flighted to Grady.
Her injuries consisted of several skull fractures, both femurs were fractured, a fractured right shoulder, a fractured pelvis, a fracture behind her left ear, on top of all the bruising and road rash. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, she had to have two brain surgeries. They were finally able to do surgery to repair both femurs and had to put temporary cartilage in her left ear due to the amount of bleeding. She was in a coma and on a ventilator for two weeks. On top of what injuries have been mentioned, upon imaging, doctors found out she had two other injuries to her brain. We had no idea if she was going to even come out of the coma or what it might look like if she did. Praise God she came out of the coma, off the vent, and has been breathing on her own.
She is still facing one more surgery to replace the portion of her skull that had to be removed due to the swelling and bleeding. She is awake; however, she is non-verbal, she doesn’t know who any of us are, she’s on a feeding tube, she isn’t walking, and will have to re-learn everything again. She is going to need many things medically and otherwise. She will need occupational therapy and physical therapy to try and get her to a point to go to acute rehabilitation. She has no insurance and her hospital bill as of last Friday reached $1.3 million, and I’m sure it is close to $2 million now. The Medicaid department at Grady has been pushing her application through, and it is pending. Praying she is approved quickly so that all the needed therapy can begin and we can find a facility for her.
We do not have the funds it’ll take when she is at a point where she can come home, as I’m sure no family would have. We are beyond blessed she’s awake, but it will be a long, slow, difficult process for our family. Continued prayers are welcome and anything you can do will help. Everything raised will go to help her in any way she may need.
