Hi, my name is Valeria, and I’ve spent most of my life not truly seeing the world around me.

I got my first real pair of glasses at 14. I remember looking around in awe. For the first time, I could see leaves on trees, facial features, details I had never noticed. I was overwhelmed with joy, but it didn’t last long. Glasses were uncomfortable in the heat where I live. They fogged up, slipped, and smudged. And most of all, they couldn’t keep up with how quickly my eyesight was getting worse.

At 16, after months of begging my low-income parents, I finally got contact lenses. They helped, but they came with anxiety. I wore them almost every day, constantly scared they’d pop out or get damaged. I’ve dealt with infections, irritations, and so much stress around my vision.

Now I live in Colombia, taking care of my elderly grandparents. Not being able to see well gives me so much anxiety, especially if there’s ever an emergency and I can’t find my contacts.

For years, I’ve dreamed of waking up, opening my eyes, and just seeing. No fear, no blurriness, no dependence. And finally, I’m eligible for corrective eye surgery. I just can’t afford it.
