Donate to Valarie Cavazos' Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Jose Luis Cuevas Jr and I come to you with my heart in hand and with full transparency asking for any help that you can give. No matter how small, anything and everything will be very much appreciated. ALL donated proceeds will be used 100% for the care that my wife Valarie Cavazos needs and will need as well as current and ongoing medical bills.

On May 5, 2024, my wife and I were on our way home, and we became victims of a road rage incident, which left my wife and myself with shots to our bodies. I by the grace of God was not impacted as severely as my wife was. I do have fragments currently in my forehead, to which we are pending insurance approval to a referral to further triage. I was also shot in the knee and do not know if there will be lasting effects later as it was on the side of the knee cap. Valarie sustained a gunshot wound to the head, and although by the grace of God she is alive, we are now faced with a long road of recovery. She spent a month in the Hospital with most of that time it being in the CCU (Critical Care Unit) and in an induced coma for 10 days due to the swelling and fluid buildup within her brain. The swelling was not moving at the rate the Dr's wanted, so they ended up with a need to do a Craniotomy and currently has no right bone flap. She will need to wear a helmet for protection. She was transferred to a rehab facility on Friday, June 7, 2024, where she is currently receiving Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy. We do not know exactly how long she will be at the Rehab facility, but it is estimated roughly around 10-15 days, more is needed, but insurance only approves a certain amount of time. Valarie was back home for a couple weeks and then transferred to another Neurological Rehabilitation Center for more intense therapy in the efforts to improve her mobility to get her back to independency. Once Valarie is back home, there will be a need for on going therapy until we can get her where she needs to be, but this unfortunately will be self-pay as insurance only covers so much.

Questions may be on why I am not working, do we not have insurance, or why are we asking for help. I want, no we as a family want to be as transparent as we can be. I am currently not working and have not been since this happened. I still have fragments in my head which makes it difficult to return to full duty in the line of work I am in. My role calls for the use of a hard hat per safety protocol and due to the injury, I am not able to which would violate safety process at work. We initially applied for the Gold Card for both of us, but as a Family they said we make too much money to qualify so therefore we were denied. Unfortunately, at work, health insurance was way too expensive for our budget. I did end up applying for insurance through the Marketplace and although Insurance will help but as we all know, we are still responsible for the deductible first and then they will cover 75%, which leaves us responsible for the other 25%. Therapy for this type of trauma is expensive and although my family is helping where they can, they also have their personal families to provide for. Valarie and I, have 3 children to continue to provide for so it makes it that much more of a struggle.

We want to thank you in advance for any help you can give. No matter how small the donation it will be of great help in her recovery.
