Hi my name is libbie I’m posting this fundraiser on behalf of my niece Brooke gibb and here is her story.
At the age of 7 Brooke fought a hard battle with medulloblastoma brain cancer we travelled to Nottingham queens medical centre from Derby for every appointment via bus and Brooke underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and intensive brain surgery, even though Brooke survived she was left with complex medical needs including a shunt being placed, post fossa syndrome and childhood dementia aswell needing hormone injections every night.
after 5 years of recovery at the age of 12 Brooke is now going through a condition called Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) that is a rare blood cancer that affects the bone marrow cells, and is needing a bone marrow transplant which her brother is her only full match they can search world wide but this is her only chance of doing it aslong as her body excepts the bone marrow and without this surgery she may not survive Brooke’s chances of a cure is 30%-50% rate.
Brooke has had numerous of tests done such as detailed blood test, multiple bone marrow biopsies, lung/liver/heart function tests each time the test come back worse and the hospital is worried that the condition is progressing too quickly and is going to form into leukaemia.
Nottingham hospital have referred Brooke to Sheffield hospital were they are rushing her surgery in we are having to travel to Sheffield for all appointments now and Brooke is due to be admitted into Sheffield hospital on Thursday the 5th of September were she will start her chemotherapy and will be staying for 8 weeks while having the transplant and other medical tests if all goes well Brooke should come home at the end of October in time for her birthday in November.
Brooke is only allowed certain people to care for her whilst at Sheffield witch will be myself her mum and dad and her uncle we will be taking it in turns to make sure Brooke get the 1-1 time she needs.
brooke is an amazing 12 year old who loves babies and reborn dolls she has always said how she wants loads of children and can’t wait to raise her own babies one day.
unfortunately we have recently been informed that following a scan on Brooke’s ovaries due to her past chemotherapy Brooke will never be able to have children. Her ovaries are too damaged and there isn’t anything the hospital can do to help her have children due to the chemical exposure from the chemotherapy.
today on the 29th August Brooke has had surgery to have her central line put in as-well as her 3rd bone marrow biopsy.
what ever money that is raised will be going towards making sure that we can get to Sheffield to be with Brooke and
we would also like to give Brooke a holiday with her siblings that she deserves as we have had to cancel her family holiday due to her procedure being pushed forward.
