We are raising money for our nephew, Oscar, who was diagnosed with a life-limiting condition called Batten Disease earlier in the year. Oscar is 8 years old and over the past few years has developed various conditions which we believed were unrelated to the disease. But in February 2020 the family’s world was torn apart by the news that all his symptoms were actually due to this horrific degenerative neurological condition. Battens has already taken Oscar’s sight and made him develop Autism and ADHD. We now face a future where Oscar will develop further conditions such as epilepsy, his motor skills will fail and will become unable to walk and talk, he will lose his memory, the equivalent to Childhood Dementia, he will lose the ability to swallow and will require feeding through a tube and will eventually become dependent on 24-hour specialist care. We don’t know how long we have with Oscar as most children lose their battle with this life-limiting disease in their teenage years.

We have been sharing Oscar’s story since we learned of his diagnosis earlier in the year on www.bemoreoscar.com and we have received so much love and support along the way. We created a ‘Bucket List of Dreams’ for Oscar and have achieved so many wonderful things for Oscar and the family to make precious memories. As we are continuing to receive donations from people wanting to give the family support, we have set up this fundraiser. The money raised here will help the family to buy him the specialist things he needs to make him comfortable and keep him safe. The road ahead is going to be a tough one as Oscar deteriorates and the future is unknown but each day we have with Oscar is a blessing and incredibly special and making his life easier is our main priority on this terrible journey.

Over the last few years, the family & friends have stood by Oscar’s side whilst he has dealt with some of the biggest changes to his life. Communication boundaries, losing his vision and now this terrible disease. Oscar doesn’t know the outcome of the recent diagnosis but I’m sure his reaction would be the same as every other obstacle he has had to face, to not complain at all and just crack on with life. We can count on one hand the number of times we have heard Oscar complain about anything. Oscar’s 2nd cousin once used the expression 'Be More Oscar’ when describing how we should all look at life in a positive upbeat way the way Oscar does, and this couldn’t be more fitting! Growing up, most people look at their parents and aspire to be like them, but now we’re looking to Oscar and gaining inspiration from him! So now we wish to #bemoreOscar, hence the title of our Facebook page.

If you wish to donate then we all can’t thank you enough and will make sure we continue to keep you updated on Oscar journey on our dedicated Facebook page where you can understand more of what the Jealous Family are going through,  please visit https://www.facebook.com/bemoreOscar/ where you can Reach out, Subscribe, Like, Share or Get Involved.

Thank you for reading and if you can be anything right now in these uncertain times please #bekind and most of all #bemoreOscar

Much Love, Laura & Danne x x x
