In 2019 I met Raymond Williams. He's my barber and friend. We sat together as I had my hair cut, and he told me about an idea he had been thinking about for the past 15 years. A story about an Invention. He told me about something he had witnessed. A young black boy, came into his shop one day. This young man was wheelchair bound. He witnessed the young man's mother struggled to carry her son into the barbershop chair. With this his idea was born, a wheelchair accessible barbershop chair, 'UPLIFT'. As he told me this story I was moved. I saw the discrepancy in treatment of disabled persons and wanted to help Ray in any way that I could. Ray saw the inequity for disabled people in the barbershop and was compelled to make a difference, and in that I wanted to stand with him. In 2022 we began to take the steps to make his idea a reality. We reached out to law schools and organizations to patent the idea and be able to bring it to life. UCLA in 2023 saw the value in this invention and decided to take this idea through the legal process of receiving a patent, free of charge; and in 2025 it was finalized. Now that we have received our patent with the help from UCLA Law, we are raising money for Licensing, Development, and Marketing of the product. We want to make all barbershops accessible, in order to do this we must work with congressmen across the country push for equitable legislation.
