Support University of Zululand Choir's NYC Experience

In 2017, while researching South African vocal music for my high school choir program, I came across a video of the University of Zululand Choir performing, “Halala”.
The joy that evolved over the course of the choir’s performance captured my attention. Investigating “traditional” resources available in the United States, I was unable to find an arrangement of the song for my students.
That turned out to be for the best.
After some digital detective work and professional networking I got to video conference with Bhekani Buthelezi, Choir Director at the University of Zululand. Bhekani and I quickly bonded over the joy and power of South African songs, music making, and the philosophies that guide our teaching. In video conferences over the years, Bhekani taught indigenous South African songs and arrangements in the aural/oral tradition to me and my choir students. The experiences enriched our small music making community in southeastern Connecticut.
This fall, Bhekani and I will finally get to meet face to face! Dr. Bhekani Buthulezi and members of his choir are touring Connecticut to perform and learn from educators and musicians at University of Connecticut, the Hartt School of Music, Western Connecticut State University, the Mystic Seaport, and others.
For many of our South African guest artists, this may be their only trip to the northeastern United States. As such, Josh is working to provide a short overnight trip to New York City where University of Zululand students will experience Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and a Broadway show. Bhekani and his choir will also perform in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
Please consider sponsoring a student for one ($353.50) or both ($707) days of the trip and provide them with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
