A Personal Connection
Hello, I am Anushka, a high school student from California, US. During a recent trip to India, I had the opportunity to visit St. Mary’s LP School in Kainakary, Kerala, which is located in my maternal hometown. This small rural school serves about 100 children from preschool through fourth grade. The school is led by a visionary principal and a team of dedicated teachers who work tirelessly to create a positive and healthy learning environment, despite facing significant challenges.
The Challenge: Overcoming Resource Scarcity
The school is surrounded by a river with no road access, and students have to take a ferry daily to reach school. The paths surrounding it are also unmaintained and sometimes unsafe. The infrastructure is not up to date and is not given nearly enough funding by the government for its maintenance. While the school has the physical space for a library and a computer lab, it critically lacks the resources to bring these facilities to life. The reality for most students is this:
* Underprivileged Backgrounds: Most students come from families with limited means, without access to learning resources.
* Lack of Essential Facilities: There is no library to foster a love of reading and no computer lab to teach vital technical skills.
* Uninspiring Classrooms: Current classroom materials are outdated and insufficient to create the joyful and stimulating atmosphere that every child deserves.
* No Safe Place to Play: The school lacks a safe and properly equipped area for recreation and play.
Our Goal: To Upgrade Learning Environments for Underserved Schools
While not all these factors are in our control, the focus is on how we can most directly impact the students. Our primary goal is to provide the students of this school with the tools they need to thrive and then to extend similar support to other schools. We aim to fund three key projects for underserved schools:
1. Establish a Library: Set up a library with books, shelves, and reading space to spark curiosity and a love for learning in students.
2. Create a Computer Lab: To provide students with the practical and technical skills necessary to succeed in the modern world.
3. Enhance the Classrooms: To supply updated materials and creative resources that will make the learning environment more engaging, joyful, and effective.
