Support Ukrainian Journalism—Support ZN,UA

Donation protected
This fundraiser seeks to help ZN,UA, a Ukrainian-owned and operated independent news organization, raise money to establish an English language edition of their site and to continue to operate during this unprecedented time.

In 1994, I was fortunate enough to go to Kyiv where I worked with the most extraordinary group of people, all of them willing to sacrifice what they had to create something new—a weekly newspaper, Dzerkalo Tyzhnia.*

This paper and these people were at the forefront of creating an independent Ukrainian media after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the creation of a free Ukrainian state. They are still there, still fighting to make a difference, and they need our help.

Over the last 28 years, Dzerkalo Tyzhnia has consistently been a standard bearer for thoughtful, insightful and influential reporting. In 2019 Dzerkalo Tyzhnia became ZN,UA, switching to a digital-only format supported by donations and advertising, free to everyone.

The invasion in February has changed everything. The world is watching in real time as events unfold. Ukrainian media is playing a crucial part in documenting what is actually occurring and combatting the falsehoods being perpetuated by the Russian state.

Ukrainian stories, told by Ukrainians, need to be heard. One way to assist in this endeavor is to bring ZN,UA to English readers. ZN,UA currently publishes in the Ukrainian and Russian languages. The few articles available in English are translated by volunteers.

ZN,UA lacks the resources needed to create an English-language version of the site; like all of Ukraine, it is struggling to survive as it is. This fundraiser would help ZN,UA provide for translation, editing, creating a web portal, video production and launching a social media campaign.

Many of the friends I made in Kyiv are still there, still willing to sacrifice everything they have for the sake of their people and their country. Please help them keep their voices alive. Any amount you can give is welcome.  Thank you.

Note: Dzerkalo Tyzhnia is known as the Mirror Weekly in English and Zerkalo Nedeli in Russian.  For more information in English about the paper and its history, please visit this page  (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dzerkalo_Tyzhnia).
