Ballet Company at UCLA is excited to announce its 2nd annual production of the Nutcracker (With A Twist!) on November 15th in Schoenberg Hall! As the first and only student-directed ballet club, we strive to provide an inclusive space for dancers of all backgrounds to creatively express their love for ballet.
The Nutcracker ballet is a classical holiday performance tradition with a score developed by Tchaikovsky. Traditionally, The Nutcracker includes a segment in which the main character, Clara, travels to different regions around the world. In the original ballet, these scenes often feature cultural appropriations of Arabian, Chinese, Spanish, and Russian traditions, using music, choreography, and costuming that are not authentic to those cultures. Our production reimagines this segment through collaborations with UCLA’s student-led cultural dance groups; inviting them to share their own music and choreography to authentically represent their cultures and backgrounds. We are so excited to announce official collaborations with Grupo Folklórico and the Chinese Cultural Dance Club!
Ballet Company at UCLA needs your help to make this possible! Your donation will help the club cover venue, costume, and prop costs. No amount is too small, and all donations are greatly appreciated. As the club continues to grow, we are excited to keep offering students the chance to engage with ballet, and your generosity makes this all possible!
