We want to show our dedicated teachers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Child Development Center (CDC) how grateful we are for their time and efforts in caring for our children. Without question, CDC teachers returned to work in May 2020 to care for the children of frontline workers and have continued to provide consistency amidst much uncertainty in our lives. Only a few months later, these very teachers have lost benefits and affordable healthcare, forcing some to leave a career they loved because they simply could not afford to stay.
Please join us in showing our gratitude as we raise funds to:
- Cover the reduction in take home pay that has resulted from outsourcing management of the center
- Provide a financial gift as our thank you during this holiday season
Background
The management of UAB’s CDC was recently outsourced to KinderCare at Work (KCW). The CDC ensures many of UAB’s healthcare workers can return to the frontlines of patient care, and the instability created by this transition has placed undue stress on an already strained workforce.
With this change, the teachers’ total compensation will drop primarily due to higher healthcare premiums with KCW. Thankfully, UAB and KCW responded to the initial parent petition with a one-time sign-on bonus, but this does not cover the compensation deficit that they now face. These exemplary teachers (19 percent employed >15 years) are paramount to the center’s outstanding reputation. With this change, teachers will also lose access to the Teachers Retirement of Alabama and any non-vested match funds they previously accrued.
As a whole, proceeding with this transition during a pandemic and economic recession could not have been more poorly timed. It has threatened a service that is vital to families and has displaced a workforce incredibly deserving of our support.
