My name is Katie, I became an auntie to Tyler at a pretty young age, and from the very beginning he was our family’s pride and joy. Tyler was born with Cyclic Neutropenia, a hereditary condition that brought many health challenges and meant frequent trips to Boston Children’s Hospital throughout his childhood. Despite everything he faced, Tyler has always shown incredible strength and resilience. Watching him grow up, overcome obstacles, and continue to move forward with determination has been both inspiring and humbling for our entire family. Today, Tyler is a father himself to a wonderful three-year-old boy, Brentley. Tragically, Brentley has been diagnosed with an even more severe form of neutropenia known as Severe Congenital Neutropenia. On February 25th, Brentley underwent a bone marrow biopsy after an abnormal clone appeared in his bloodwork. The results were devastating: 27% of his bone marrow has been overtaken by this abnormal clone, and doctors discovered a deletion of chromosome 7. Although Brentley has not developed leukemia, the chromosome 7 deletion places him at extremely high risk, and he now needs a bone marrow transplant as soon as possible. The urgency and uncertainty surrounding his condition have been overwhelming for our entire family. We are doing everything we can to support Tyler, Brentley, and Brentley’s mom, Kassaundra. Kassaundra and her other children were swabbed to see if they might be bone marrow matches, since Tyler is unable to donate due to his own medical condition. Unfortunately, Tyler’s job does not offer FMLA, meaning any time he spends at the hospital with Brentley will be unpaid. Kassaundra is also unable to take paid leave from her new job. The financial strain of mounting medical bills, lost wages, travel expenses, and even daily hospital parking costs is immense. Any support you can provide to my nephew and his family — whether through prayers, sharing their story, or financial assistance — would mean more than words can express as we walk through this incredibly difficult time together.
