I am writing this on behalf of my sister Laura but especially on behalf of Turkey. For those of you who know Turkey he is unapologetically himself. He is true to himself at all costs and ball is life. He has a soft spot for tea-cup sized dogs and loves the wind in his ears. He is vocal and goofy and does what he wants. He hates to cuddle but also hates when you don't ask him to cuddle. He is truly one of a kind. Laura, Turkey and Arlo recently relocated from Texas to Massachusetts to be closer to family and friends. During their cross country trip home, Laura's car was stolen from her Air BNB. It was filled to the brim with all of her worldly possessions. Dog food, underwear, you name it. Over the last year, Laura has been rebuilding her life and slowly accumulating new things but has continued to be met with some pretty bad luck. (Including replacing her car only to have it totaled by a distracted driver a week later). It has been a trying year for Laura, Turkey and Arlo.
Today, during a check up Turkey had a biopsy of a mass that had recently popped up and Laura was told it is a mast cell tumor. This is a cancerous tumor that needs to be addressed urgently to determine its severity. No one expects to have such an emergent diagnosis handed to them and given that time is truly of the essence here we are trying to have Turkey's testing done urgently so we can schedule him for surgery.
As of right now, Turkey needs to have labs to ensure that he can tolerate anesthesia as well as a chest x-ray to ensure his disease has not spread. Laura is a part of a vet that offers a 10% discount if you are a member and was quoted up to $1450 for this part of his care. After this, Turkey will have his mass removed and it will be sent to pathology. From there, we will know if this is a high grade mass or low grade mass. This will essentially tells us how aggressive his tumor is and determine his plan of care going forward. The surgical procedure has been quoted to be a minimum of $3500 dollars, with the potential for it to be much higher as they will not know how large the mass truly is until they are in there.
Absolutely no one expects to have this sort of diagnosis handed to them, and given the past year this is an incredible financial stressor. There is nothing Laura would not do for Turkey but unfortunately given the time sensitive nature of this diagnosis the cost is just too high to produce urgently. I know that everyone has their own lives and stuff going on, but I also know that every bit counts and there is strength in numbers. I would be so grateful if you would consider helping us to get a swift and comprehensive treatment plan in place for Turkey. Thank you so much.
