Hi there! We're the Corlis's - Samantha & John - and this is Tugboat. Tugboat is a 6 1/2 year old Great Dane, and a big ole' hunk of love. About two weeks ago, we noticed his ankle swollen after a walk. We figured it was just a sprain, but it didn't get any better. Like any good pet parent, we took a trip to the vet and were unfortunately hit by an incredibly unexpected diagnosis - bone cancer.
The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of research and phone calls. We were fortunate to secure an appointment at LSU Veterinary Hospital, and met with oncology and the surgery team yesterday. They confirmed the initial diagnosis and created a care plan for him. He will need to have his front leg amputated, and then followed up with 4-6 rounds of chemotherapy & radiation, all taking place in Baton Rouge. His care team feels his prognosis is great - he's healthy and still the sweetest guy, relishing in attention - even though he's in pain.
We're incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to have him cared for at LSU, but his medical bills are stacking quickly. The estimated cost for his care is $12,000 - $13,500 for the amputation and chemo & radiation. His amputation surgery is scheduled for Thursday, August 22nd.
We know - that's a huge number. But, we want to do anything in our power to give him the best care and opportunities. What started as a shared Facebook post 6 years ago about a "free dane" in a not so stellar situation, has turned into one of the best fur children we could have ever hoped for.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for taking the time to read our story and consider donating to his care. If you are unable to financially show support, sharing on social media is equally as helpful. We will keep you updated on his progress each step of the way.
