During my pregnancy with Truly, our doctor told us that she would be born with clubfoot and that she would likely need casting and leg braces to correct it. We prepared ourselves for that journey and were ready to do whatever was necessary to help our daughter.
The night after I gave birth to Truly, everything changed. I was told that her condition was much more complicated and severe than we had originally been prepared for and she has a rare condition called tibial hemimelia . We were referred to Scottish Rite for Children in Dallas, where we were told that amputation of Truly’s foot may be the best option for her future.
Hearing those words completely shattered my heart. Truly is my first and only child, and I could not wrap my mind around having to amputate her foot—especially when I could see her foot and toes moving. As her mother, I knew I had to learn everything I could and explore every possible option before making such a life-changing decision for my daughter.
After returning home from Dallas, I began doing extensive research through social media, including Facebook and TikTok. I searched for other parents whose children had conditions similar to Truly’s. I wanted to hear their stories, understand the decisions they had made, and learn how their children were progressing in life.
During my search, I came across several families who had traveled to Florida to the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute for limb reconstruction. I reached out and scheduled a Zoom consultation with one of their orthopedic surgeons to find out whether reconstruction could be an option for Truly.
That conversation gave me hope.
I had an incredible conversation with Dr. Miller, who explained that she believed reconstruction could be an option for Truly and did not recommend amputation based on her assessment. For the first time since Truly was born, I felt like there was another path we could explore.
Because we live in Texas and Dr. Miller is in Florida, pursuing this option means traveling out of state for Truly’s consultation, treatment, and potentially surgery. This journey will come with significant medical, travel, and living expenses, but as her mother, I feel it is important to explore every possible option that could give Truly the opportunity to grow, walk, and live her life to the fullest.
I am fighting for my daughter and doing everything I can to give her the best chance possible. We are asking for your help as we take this next step in Truly’s journey. Every donation, share, prayer, and word of encouragement means more to our family than we could ever express.
Thank you for standing with us and believing in Truly.
