When we first set out to build TR|UMPH, we knew we were chasing something much bigger than a standard campus event. My name is Kevin, and I’ve had the privilege of handling the logistics of this initiative, alongside an incredibly talented artist and creative visionary, Jeffrey “Jet Just Landed” Daniels.

When Jeffrey and I first connected in early 2025, he shared an ambitious dream: to build a student-led, high-production Black History Month concert. Inspired by the deep cultural storytelling of Kendrick Lamar’s historic halftime performance, our goal was to design a show that could not be ignored. A performance that would express the true joy, grief, complexity, and resilience of Black history in America.

But bringing this vision to life as college students has been one of the hardest things we’ve ever done.

From the beginning, we faced massive logistical, political, and financial hurdles. We initially dreamed of filling local arenas, but quickly realized the cost of rent and insurance was far beyond our reach. We tried collaborating with university departments and local choirs, only to be met with constant administrative barriers, skepticism, and gatekeeping. We had doors shut in our faces, leaving us to figure out how to preserve the raw purpose of our show without letting it be silenced.

So, we adapted. When we couldn’t find indoor rehearsal spaces, the choreography team rehearsed in campus parking garages, working through dropping winter temperatures. When professional venues fell through, we hard-pivoted to secure FGCU’s outdoor Veteran’s Pavilion on the library lawn.

And when our funding fell short, we didn't give up. My Sigma Lambda Beta chapter, which had already been using its official status to reserve spaces and lend the TR|UMPH team legitimacy, pooled together whatever money we could spare. I personally contributed $100 of my own money, and Jeffrey put up $200 out of his own pocket just so we could buy basic costumes and essential equipment. To make sure our stage was safely lit, I ended up buying temporary floodlights from a local hardware store with the plan to return them after the show. We have stretched ourselves thin, balancing heavy class schedules, jobs, and late-night logistics just to build a platform for student artists to shine.

Despite all of these barriers, we proved what is possible when passion and purpose collide. Our debut show successfully checked in nearly a hundred attendees and brought electric, unifying energy to our campus. But we are just getting started.

We want to expand this experience to reach 500+ students and community members, establishing TR|UMPH as an annual, lasting campus tradition at FGCU. To do that, we need your help to make this sustainable.

We are raising money to cover critical production needs that we can no longer pay for out of pocket, including but not limited to:

* Professional sound and audio systems to fill a slightly larger venue.

* High-quality stage lighting to properly capture the emotional acts of the show.

* Production logistics, including staging, costumes, changing tents, and marketing materials.

TR|UMPH is more than a concert; it is a movement to educate, inspire, and foster a deep appreciation for Black art and culture. It belongs to the students, the performers, and every single person who believes that art can change the world.
