Hi everyone,
I never imagined I would have to make something like this, but over the past few days, my dog Rex’s health declined extremely quickly, and the emotional and financial toll has become overwhelming.
A few weeks ago, Rex started having some clicking in his hips, so I took him to the vet. At the time, I was told everything seemed okay, so I tried not to panic.
Then on Sunday morning after a walk, he suddenly struggled to get out of the car and didn’t want to move around much afterward. Late that night, he woke me up panting heavily with a racing heart, and I knew something was seriously wrong.
I rushed him to Canada West Veterinary Specialists, where we spent hours being evaluated. At first, they believed it could be the beginning stages of IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), but because he could still walk, we were sent home around 5 AM with instructions to monitor him closely.
By 1 PM that same afternoon, Rex could no longer walk.
His back legs rapidly began failing, and I rushed him back to emergency care. Over the next several hours, his condition continued to worsen, and the prognosis changed from possible rehabilitation to emergency spinal surgery as he was becoming paralyzed.
The original surgery estimate was approximately $16,000, with my upfront costs already being around $4,500 for the first surgery alone. Since then, Rex’s condition worsened again, requiring additional emergency CT scans and a second surgery. I still do not have the final bill, as he remains hospitalized and his recovery is currently day-by-day, but the total costs are expected to be significantly higher.
On top of the veterinary expenses, I have had to cancel work to stay with Rex and manage everything happening so suddenly. As a self-employed small business owner, every missed day of work means lost income, averaging about $1,000 per day, while my regular business expenses and bills continue. Once Rex comes home, he will require constant monitoring, strict recovery care, rehabilitation, and follow-up treatments, which will likely mean additional time away from work and reduced hours for the next several weeks.
Anyone who knows me knows how much Rex means to me. He’s family, and I’m doing absolutely everything I can to give him the best chance at recovery.
If you’re able to donate, share this page, or even just keep Rex in your thoughts, it would mean more than I can express. Every little bit truly helps right now.
Thank you so much for your kindness, support, and love during one of the hardest weeks of my life.
