We’re a family of five from Sydney, Australia, with three little kids aged 4, 2 and 1. What was supposed to be a simple layover in Dallas on our way to Honduras has turned into something we never imagined. We arrived on the 26th of November and by the next day my fiancée Triana suddenly became very sick. She had really bad pain that scared both of us, so I took her to the hospital. They told her it was a kidney stone, gave her some medication and sent her home.

A couple of hours later she got a lot worse. She had a fever, chills, shaking and the pain became unbearable. I rushed her back to the hospital and this time they found the stone was infected behind it. They took her straight into emergency surgery to put a stent in. After more tests the doctors told us the infection had already gone into her bloodstream and she had sepsis. Hearing that was honestly one of the scariest moments of my life. They said if we had waited a few more hours it could have ended very differently.

Because she wasn’t allowed to fly, the airline cancelled her flights to Honduras and also her return flight to Australia and marked her as a no show, even with medical paperwork. We had no choice but to separate from our kids. I had to take our three little ones to Honduras to stay with family so they would be safe, and the very next day I flew straight back to Dallas to be with Triana while she goes through all of this.

We’ve spent all of our money trying to get through this. Extra flights, lost tickets, her surgery, the hospital stay, medications, and now accommodation here in Texas while she continues treatment. We still don’t know how long we need to stay here or when she will be well enough to fly, and we don’t know how long it will be until we are reunited with our three babies again. It’s been incredibly hard being sick in another country and being far away from our kids.

Any help at all, even the smallest amount, will go towards her medical care, medication, somewhere to stay while she recovers, and eventually getting her home safely to our children. None of this was expected, and we’re just taking things day by day. Thank you so much to anyone who can help us. It truly means more than you know.

Unas horas después empeoró muchísimo. Le dio fiebre, escalofríos, temblores y el dolor se volvió insoportable. La llevé de urgencia otra vez al hospital y esta vez descubrieron que la piedra estaba infectada por detrás. La llevaron directamente a cirugía de emergencia para colocarle un stent. Después de más pruebas, los médicos nos dijeron que la infección ya había pasado a la sangre y que tenía sepsis. Escuchar eso fue, sinceramente, uno de los momentos más aterradores de mi vida. Dijeron que si hubiéramos esperado unas horas más, todo podría haber terminado de una manera muy diferente.

Como no le permitían volar, la aerolínea canceló sus vuelos a Honduras y también su regreso a Australia, marcándola como “no show”, incluso con todos los documentos médicos. No tuvimos otra opción que separarnos de nuestros hijos. Tuve que llevar a nuestros tres pequeños a Honduras para que estuvieran seguros con la familia, y al día siguiente volé directamente de regreso a Dallas para estar con Triana mientras pasa por todo esto.

Hemos gastado todo nuestro dinero intentando sobrellevar esta situación: vuelos adicionales, boletos perdidos, su cirugía, la hospitalización, medicamentos y ahora alojamiento aquí en Texas mientras continúa con el tratamiento. Aún no sabemos cuánto tiempo tendremos que quedarnos ni cuándo estará lo suficientemente bien para volar, y tampoco sabemos cuánto tiempo pasará antes de que podamos volver a estar con nuestros tres bebés. Ha sido increíblemente duro estar enfermos en otro país y lejos de nuestros hijos.

Cualquier ayuda, incluso la más pequeña, irá destinada a sus gastos médicos, medicación, alojamiento mientras se recupera y, finalmente, a poder llevarla de vuelta a casa sana y salva con nuestros hijos.
