Tre Cool Emergency Vet Fund
Tre Cool and his 4 brothers were born from a very pregnant stray mama cat that we picked up off the streets after a punk rock show in Chicago. The boys all just turned 1 on May 10th, and just weeks after his birthday, Tre started to lose his usual hyper bouncy kitten energy, and stopped showing interest in food. When we noticed his nose & gums had also lost their usual pink color, and it seemed he might be having issues using the litter box, we reached out to NAWS Humane Society where he was registered as a foster to get him in immediately to see a vet. NAWS did a brief exam and ultrasound to see if anything was possibly blocked, which came up normal, then we were sent right over to Midwest Emergency Animal Hospital for blood tests. His red blood cell count was very low, and they ran SNAP tests which they then claimed were (very) faintly positive for FELV. Their firm decision was to euthanize him, unless we signed paperwork to take over cost ourselves and take him to get further emergency testing...
Other than common stray cat parasites Tre and his family were treated for, and his healed broken toe, he had always been a big strong happy healthy boy. His mom and siblings all tested FELV negative previously, he did not have a fever and was clearly alert, cuddling from one lap to the other, purring, and making biscuits on us both in the waiting room. This sudden critical diagnosis was not making any bit of sense and we could not just give up on this sweet boy, so after tears and frantic phone calls we signed him over and rushed to Premier in Chicago. This wonderful vet performed an emergency blood transfusion, ran further blood tests, and retrieved a bone marrow sample to be sent out. Everything went well, and after just one night at Premier Tre was sent home with steroid & antibiotic medication, and an order to come back on Monday 6.3 to review the test results. His nose was pink again, and Tre was eating and using the litter box like normal.
The vet does not think FELV or FIP are likely, and has a few possible ideas of what could be going on. We are hoping for the best, and loving on Tre all we can. In the meantime we really need help with these unexpected vet bills. We had not yet caught up with previous rescue vet bills, and depending on what the next step is for Tre, more may be coming very soon. Thus far this emergency has racked up close to $5000, and Monday's visit will add more. On top of all the other hungry rescues in our care, we are struggling. We will fight with all we have got for Tre Cool, but we can only do so much on our own.
Please help or share if you are able?
