A few weeks ago, my life changed dramatically. It started with severe kidney spasms that sent me to the ER, just before a scheduled neurological MRI that had to be cancelled. After being put on antibiotics, a follow-up revealed a very high PSA and a referral to a urologist for a biopsy. On Easter Sunday, I experienced severe shakes and chills, leading to another urgent care visit and a trip to the Emergency Room. My heart rate was dangerously high, and it turned out the antibiotic for my UTI wasn’t covering the bacteria I had—resulting in sepsis. I was hours away from a life-threatening situation and spent nine days in the hospital. During my stay, doctors discovered a blood clot, and I received three platelet infusions while fighting the infection. Once the infection was under control, I began preparing for cancer treatment, with many specialists involved: infectious disease, urology, and oncology. Meanwhile, I was also dealing with vertigo and double vision, which had to take a back seat to the more urgent medical issues. Recently, I had a dizzy spell and a fall, so now neurology is back in the picture to address my balance issues before starting full cancer treatment. This journey has been overwhelming, and I never expected to be in this situation. It’s highly embarrassing to ask for help, but the costs are unknown and daunting. I can cover my regular monthly expenses for now, but medical bills, transport, and living expenses may become unmanageable if I’m unable to work.
