A New Knee
In January of 2021, Tony went in for a routine procedure to have his left knee replaced. The initial surgery (1) went fine and he was sent home to recover. A month later, his mother-in-law passed away and while moving her belongings to ready her house for sale, Tony's lower leg bone broke away from the new knee appliance. He went back into surgery and had the new knee pulled out along with all the cement and had a second knee put in (2).
Infection Sets In
Things with the second knee were progressing well until it was soon discovered that an infection had set in. A challenging staph strain had entered the wound during surgery, so the best course of action was to endure another surgery to open the leg again and clean everything out (3). However, despite the doctors' efforts, the infection remained, so they were forced to take the second replacement out and replace it with a temporary spacer until the knee was ready for yet another replacement (4).
A Difficult Diagnosis
Despite ongoing antibiotic treatment, the infection persisted, resulting in a third knee replacement (5). At this point, Tony was referred to Emory in Atlanta. There, the surgeon told him that unfortunately, the only solution to eradicate the infection would be to amputate the leg above the knee, as no current antibiotic can tackle this particular staph strain. The infected knee is extremely swollen, painful, and unstable, causing significant discomfort and disability for Tony.
Decisions Made
After much prayer, discussion, and support, the decision was made to go through with amputation. While this will certainly be an adjustment, we are confident that this is the best course of action given the nature of everything Tony has endured for the past 3.5 years. We are so ready to move forward with our lives and put this chapter behind us and are trusting God to pave the way forward for this to happen.
A Minor Setback
An appointment for his, now 6th, surgery was originally set for May 29th. However, one of the requirements for a surgery of this nature was that he get a sign-off from his primary physician. After it was revealed that Tony had suffered a heart attack at 29, the physician felt it safest to order a nuclear stress test to be sure his heart was in good condition to endure the strains an amputation puts on the body. This would mean that, while he worked to find a cardiologist and an open appointment to perform said test, he would have to cancel the amputation appointment until he received the all-clear.
All Signals Go
The stress test went well and all doctors signed off. Finally, with all needed signatures received, he has a new amputation date set for June 4th.
At this time, we ask for your prayers that:
- the surgery is successful and uneventful
- his heart and all other parts of his body hold strong throughout the whole process from start to finish
- the doctors and medical staff make wise choices and are clear-headed and alert from start to finish
- all tools, devices, equipment, machines, linens, etc are sterilized and the room is free from any infection/bacteria
- he rehabs well and is able to adjust to his new life
- ALL infection be eradicated and cleared out to never return, in Jesus' name!
What Brought Us Here?
We are reaching out for your support as Tony faces a challenging journey ahead. Tony has chosen to get a prosthetic leg to help with mobility moving forward, a decision aimed at improving his quality of life. The prosthetic legs last about 3 or so years before they have to be refitted and replaced. Over time, the cost adds up considerably and unfortunately, insurance only pays a small percentage. We are seeking donations to help cover the costs of prosthesis, which will enable Tony to regain mobility and independence. Your generosity will make a significant difference in his recovery and ability to lead a more fulfilling life. Any contribution, big or small, is deeply appreciated. Thank you for your kindness and support.
